Nea Genia Ziridis (Greece)

Nea Genia Ziridis (Greece)

Our school, "Nea Genia Ziridis", is located in Spata and includes Kindergarten, Primary school, High school and Lyceum.
Our students, approximately 1.600, come from various regions of Attica. The medium distance that a pupil covers in order to reach the school is about 20km. The place where the school is located is not supported by the network of the public transportation, and this limits the ways the students come to school. Most of them either use the school bus or a private car.

The Traffic snake game took part in May 2008. Four departments of our public school (108 children); two of the Fourth class, one from the Fifth and one from the Sixth class played the game. As it was expected, from the first measurement, we had a huge number of environmental friendly trips, due to the use of school bus. Thus, the students that could make the difference - and they made the difference, although it was small - were those that used to travel to the school by a private car alone (only with their parents). The children accepted the game with enthusiasm and they found amusing the process of finding some schoolmates -who lived near them - to share the same car to go to their school.

We created the first "Classroom of the Future" in Greece (2007 - http://www.sof.gr): our students have a light-weight portable "electronic schoolbag" and are connected wirelessly to the "electronic" blackboard of their classroom, the Internet and the "electronic" tools of their teacher. This "electronic" schoolbag (tabletpc) contains all their books and sheets as well as virtual labs, simulations, multimedia material, their schoolwork and all tools connected to the educational process. The classroom can take many forms (such as "traditional" class, "laboratory" or "collaborative"). The classroom arrangement can easily change thanks to the wireless equipment and portable computers.

Doukas School also participates in several European and Hellenic research projects such us EPET, EPEAEK, PAVE, LINGUA, TELEMATICS, COMENIUS, Educational Multimedia Task Force.
